Android 4.0 or Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS) finally brings screenshots natively to the mobile platform, to a lot of users of custom ROMs such as CyanogenMod or Darkys ROM it may seem like this has been a feature for a while but that isn’t the case.
To take a screenshot:
- Simply hold down the Volume Down button and Power button for about a second.
You’ll see a flash and the screen will be framed which shows the screenshot was taken (I’ve tried grabbing a screenshot of this screen, but it’s pretty tricky and no luck yet!). The screenshot will be saved in a folder /Pictures/Screenshots on your phones internal SD card.
You’ll also get a new notification in the notification bar saying “Saving Screenshot…” and once it’s done there’ll be a “Screenshot captured.” notification in the pull down menu which will take you directly the screenshot in the Gallery.
For more screenshots, check out my first look and impressions post about ICS!

No offense but Galaxy S Android phones since Froyo could take screenshots stock (w/o root). On the Euro/International version it was a combination of holding the back key then pressing the home key. On the U.S. versions it was holding the back key then pressing the power key.
Yes, that’s true but this is a feature which will be available on all phones with ICS.
Additionally I’m not sure why I would have taken offence?

[…] Apparently the Samsung screenshot shortcut has been removed because there’s now a native way to take screenshots in ICS. [How To Take Screenshots in Ice Cream Sandwich (Android 4.0.x)] […]
Tested this on my Galaxy Nexus with ICS and works perfectly. Cheers!
Confirmed on Codename Android ICS build 1.5.6 on the Galaxy S Showcase. Love the sound bite that goes with it. <3
Samsung Nexus S (I9020A) w/ ICS 4.0.4
Confirmed it works. Buttons have to be pushed at EXACTLY the same time and held for about 1 second.
Indeed. My phone was today updated to Ice Cream Sandwich and I remembered that now I could take shots. It’s a NEXUS S. On Gingerbread it wasn’t possible and now it works! Hold VOLUME DOWN and POWER BUTTON at the SAME time. Works perfectly!
My Nexus S updated to ICS a week ago, and I just remembered that phones with ICS could take screenshots natively. Googled ‘screenshot ics’, and this was the first result. I didn’t even have to scroll down to see the instructions… which was 1 very simple bullet point. All in all, an excellent result. This post is much appreciated! A++, would read again :P
Works fine on Samsung Galaxy Note running ICS 4.0.4. Don’t hold down too long or sometimes it reboots the phone.

It worked on the Droid Razr! :)))
If you hold down these two buttons to long on the Razr Maxx it will reset your phone as that is how you reset the Maxx due to no battery removing capabilities. It took me a few tries but I finally perfected it. Thanks!!
On my Samsung Galaxy Note with ics 4.0.4, I swipe 3 fingers sideways down to up or up to down, I think this is the easiest.

Not sure if its covered yet Coz I can’t be bothered to read all the posts but I’ve read a few ppl saying it doesn’t work on Motorola XOOM (MZ601)….. To clear things up – It certainly, definitly does!!…… I updated to ICS (no root, no third party software) followed the instructions, and it worked perfect!!
