How To: Fix “Failed to download repository information Check your Internet connection.”

If you’re getting this error but you’re still connected to the internet this page might help. This error is sometimes caused by repository’s which are down or broken.

Failed to download repository information
Check your Internet connection.

From terminal run the following command:

 sudo apt-get update

If the output runs through a few repositorys but ends with something similar to the below (most probably with different repositorys failing) and ultimately stopping your updating process then there is a good chance you can fix it by just removing those failing sources from the software sources.

Err http://ppa.launchpad.net maverick/main Sources
404 Not Found
Err http://ppa.launchpad.net maverick/main amd64 Packages
404 Not Found
W: Failed to fetch http://ppa.launchpad.net/bugs-sehe/gparted/ubuntu/dists/maverick/main/source/Sources.gz 404 Not Found
W: Failed to fetch http://ppa.launchpad.net/bugs-sehe/gparted/ubuntu/dists/maverick/main/binary-amd64/Packages.gz 404 Not Found
E: Some index files failed to download, they have been ignored, or old ones used instead.

Software Sources can be found under either:

Applications > Ubuntu Software Centre > Edit > Software Sources..
OR
System > Administrator > Synaptic Package Manager > Settings > Repositorys

Click the Other Software tab.

Nnow find the repositories which caused the failure on the update and uncheck them and then close the Software Centre.

Re-run the update command and hopefully everything will work!

 sudo apt-get update

Check the example below where gparted was causing the error:

True, but from my experience if this continues to happen for more than a couple of days it’s likely that the repository is old/dead and when it’s stopping you updating the rest of your system it’s probably worth removing it and checking it’s still hosted there.

i just experienced that problem today. what i I did is just change the server for repositories in my synaptic manager(software sources).

Hi Alex,

My problem is that almost ALL the repository sources give me an error message.

I cannot possibly remove all the source directories, can I? Any help or idea most appreciated.

Cheers,

Damien

@Alex have you checked internet connection? Since natty is currently supported than their is no chance to get this error. It could be internet problem.

sorry but if any body know how to solve this problem just explain how with pic cuz I’m anew user I dont know any thing about ubuntu ?? I just installed it and had this problem whenever I tried to install any software ?

I am also having the same problem i.e almost all the repositiries are corrupted and i am unable to download or update anything. But my internet connnection is fine, I am able to browse without any issue.

Please help if you can !

after doing such stuff it shows following error
E:Could not get lock /var/lib/dpkg/lock – open (11: Resource temporarily unavailable)

E: Unable to lock the administration directory (/var/lib/dpkg/), is another process using it?

@mp This error happens when you try to install packages using through the terminal while the synaptic package manager is operating simultaneously. Try closing the window of synaptic manager. It worked for me. :)

pleasen any one could help me how to fix this problem………..?

THERE MUST BE A SOLUTION FOR A PROBLEM.

“Failed to download repository information Check your Internet connection”

I have the same issue facing last one weak, struggle a lot to resolve this issue.
1st thing i want to say here there is “no Internet issue” here in this issue so don’t just tell to others you have internet issue. No.
steps to resolve.

Open your terminal
$sudo apt-get update
if not updating.

take your complete backup into your external drive.
make a boot-able drive with 12.04 Ubuntu or as per your requirement.
and boot from the pen drive.

and REINSTALL THE OS..SIMPLE PROBLEM RESOLVED.

Note: This problem make you mad…..BECAUSE it can not be resolved.
thank you so much.
